Becherel is a little medieval village with many narrow, charming streets. Situated some 35 kilometers from the historic center of Rennes, this place is no different from other towns in Brittany with its churches and castles. But, Becherel has something more, though. This village is a real paradise for every bookworm. Labeled "The City of Books", Bécherel has some 15 incredible bookstores for only 650 inhabitants. Here, you can find many rare books. So, if you are a book lover, you should absolutely put this place on your must-see list.

The City of Books

How has Becherel become the City of Books? A Breton association called the "Savenn Douar" decided to set up a cultural event in the old center of Bécherel, which was almost abandoned since the 1960s. For that reason, they launched the first book festival in 1989 in this village, and soon Becherel was labeled "The City of Books". In the beginning, only three bookstores have opened, but only a few years later, this place had the House of Books and has become famous as the French Capital of Books. Some inspiring events are also taking place in this village every year, such as the "Festival of Ancient Greek and Latin" and the "Fête du Livre."

Fete du Livre

Since 1989, the "Fete du Livre," is organized every Easter weekend in Becherel. This festival of the book is a very popular cultural event that proposes meetings between writers and the public. Many exhibitions are also part of this event as well as a book market, workshops, concerts, readings, and movie screenings. There is also a special program dedicated to children and families. In Becherel, every first Sunday of every month, a special book market is also held (except in January and February). Also, in this little village you shouldn't miss the Night of the Book, a great book event organized every August.

Books in the Donjon

Becherel is a perfect place to just stroll around its narrow, charming streets. In this real paradise for every bookworm, you can easily spend a day lost between bookshelves. If you are looking for some special, rare, or old book, then you should visit the "Librairie du Donjon." This bookshop is the most exciting place, full of curiosities and books. Here, you can find many novels and books from science fiction, religion, music, and philosophy to poetry and theater. When you feel tired, then go to the "Petit Bazar Breton," a little bookshop and a tearoom and order a cup of aromatic delight. This is a perfect space where you can relax and enjoy the end of the day in this charming little village.
