Asturias is a region in the north of Spain, full of mountains and rivers. It is the perfect place to do adventure sports while enjoying nature at its best. Asturias is also the region where you find the breath-taking Pi[cos de Europa national park](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/hiking-the-ruta-del-cares-in-picos-de-europa-go41) and also where you can enjoy canoeing down the popular river of Sella. The descent of the Sella in a canoe is one of the most popular activities in the region of the Picos de Europa, in eastern Asturias. It is a great activity to do with your family, friends or in couples - I have had this experience twice in my life, and I’d do it again as soon as I get back to A[sturias](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/a-quick-visit-to-gijon-asturias-hb95). It is truly an experience you cannot miss in your visit!
The descent of the Sella River starts in a town called Arriondas and finishes in another town called Ribadesella, where the river flows into the Cantabrian Sea. There are 17 km approximately between these two points, where you will enjoy Asturian landscapes while having plenty of fun. Many companies provide this service, and you can choose the one that you like the most. I recommend you to take a look at Google and see the people's reviews.
I assure you all the companies provide you with the same kind of service, though. They all provide the equipment necessary to make the descent of the River Sella: a canoe, paddle, life vest (mandatory during the tour), tight boat for belongings, and a wetsuit if the weather requires it. The canoes companies usually have one, two, or even three seats; you choose the one that suits your situation the best. The service also includes a picnic per person, some sandwiches, a piece of fruit, maybe some chocolate and a bottle of water. An instructor will give necessary instructions for handling the rowing and the canoe, as well as an indication about the most contentious points of the route. During the trip, there will be several points to stop to rest, to eat, and get some energy back, before continuing with the adventure.
It is advisable to book your ticket in advance, to guarantee a place and avoid any problem. Some companies even give you discounts on the price when paying in advance, and the prices are usually around 20-22€ for adults and 12€ for kids.
I also recommend you to take with you sportswear or swimwear and comfortable shoes that can get wet (not flip-flops), a towel and some clothes to get changed if you wish, after finishing. There is also the option of completing the route at kilometer 7, but I honestly believe it’s worth doing it entirely, even though you will get up the next day with sore arms- especially if you are not used to rowing. It is also advisable to use sunscreen and a hat, in addition to an airtight bag for phone, keys, money or other stuff.
Enjoy canoeing in the amazing Sella River while you surround yourself with the most magnificent Asturian landscapes. Make some time to swim (if the weather allows you to) and have fun with your friends & family. Get ready for this unforgettable experience!
