An interesting fact about Slovenia is that although it is not very big in size, the cultural and natural diversity between its regions can sometimes be quite large. Potica

Potica or a nut roll is one of the most known pastries typical for Slovenia. It is often made when families gather for a holiday, like Christmas or Easter and have a delicious meal, talk and enjoy each other’s company. There are many different variants of potica, the most common nowadays being the one filled with walnuts. If you like cooking and baking, you can even try to make this famous Slovenian dish yourself.

Jabolčni zavitek 

This is a type of sweet layered pastry, also known as “štrudelj” in Slovenian, usually with a filling made out of grated apples or other types of fruits. It originates from the Austrian cuisine, but it soon became a part of Slovenian gastronomy and one of the most common home-made desserts, as well as a beloved dish in the restaurants and cafes.

Kremna rezina

I am sure that if you have ever heard something regarding the Slovenian desserts, the name "cremeschnitte" or "kremna rezina", must sound familiar. This custard cream cake is very popular, especially in the famous area of Bled, where it is said to be the best in the country. You can try this delicious dessert at the Bled Castle restaurant, located in the Bled castle with a magnificent view. There are also other variants of cremeschnitte that are typical for some other Central European countries.

Prekmurska gibanica

This dish originally comes from the eastern part of Slovenia, more specifically Prekmurje, but today, it is one of the most known and popular traditional desserts spread all over Slovenia. It is a type of layered pastry, containing walnuts, poppy seeds, apples and raising. It also has a unique name, as the word "gibanica" would translate to “something that is folded”, which describes this tasty dessert and its many layers well. A restaurant in Ljubljana, called Hiša Pod Gradom, offers one of the best tastings of this traditional Slovenian dish.

Buhteljni 

"Buhteljni" are sort of sweet rolls, usually filled with jam and covered in powdered sugar. They can be served as a dessert or a main dish. Just like chremeschnitte, they are also widespread in other European countries, nevertheless keeping a unique taste and popularity in Slovenia.
