Independence Day is the most important holiday in any country, and Georgia is no exception**. **In Georgia, we celebrate in on the 26th of May every year. It is also known as the Day of the First Republic, and it is celebrated since the adoption of the A*ct of Independence *in 1918. So, in 2018, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the independence of our country. I am going to tell you more about this holiday as it has a very interesting history behind it.

History

Georgia was a part of the Russian Empire since 1800, and after the Russian revolution and the First World War, Georgia could finally become independent in May 1918. After this, our country declared itself as an independent democratic republic. Joseph Stalin, who was the leader of the Soviet Union for more than 30 years, was from Georgia. From 1922 until 1991, this day was not celebrated because of the different suppressions from the Soviet Union. After a while, when the Soviet regime collapsed, this day became the national holiday again. So, since then, the whole Georgia celebrates the Independence Day

The celebration

In the 20th century, Independence Day was not a big celebration because of some financial problems. From 2004, we have a tradition of military parades where you can see different exhibitions of the new equipment. There is an official part of the ceremony at the beginning of the day where you can hear political speeches and see soldiers demonstrating their force on the freedom square. Actually, *Freedom Square *is the main location in Tbilisi, where Independence Day is celebrated every year.

In addition, the 26th of May is associated with beautiful fireworks, concerts, fairs and other public and private events. Everybody is celebrating the culture and long history of Georgia. You can see Georgian soldiers holding the national flag and marching on Rustaveli Avenue as well. This year was a special one as the new soldiers from all over Georgia made an oath to serve their country. It happened at the same time at different locations. People could see this process on the Freedom Square, near the Uplistsikhe cave town, in Gremi that is located in Kakheti and other important places. Making an oath at the same time on different locations all over Georgia sends a symbolical message that our country is united.
