Let's guess you are in **Croatia **and have one or maybe two days extra. And let's guess that you are in Zagreb, but you are looking for a more peaceful place, away from the big capital rush. I have an idea for your - visit Sisak, a peaceful little town by the river Kupa.
**Sisak **is a small town, one hour ride south from **Zagreb, **via A11 highway. For a small town, it has a very rich cultural heritage. Together with beautiful parks and well-protected nature near the city, Sisak is a sort of heaven on Earth.
When in Sisak, do not miss the long walks along **Kupa River. **In springtime, when the river is at its highest level, you could go for a boat ride along the **Kupa **and **Odra **rivers.
Also, a few kilometers from **Sisak, **you will find the Lonjsko polje Nature Park, one of the most wonderful nature parks in Croatia. In this park, you will see old villages with unique architectural beauty, such as the Čigoč village. So, if you are in love with nature, or just need to breathe clean air, come and visit Lonjsko polje.
Walking by the river, you will reach an old bridge on the Kupa River. Made of the red bricks with white arches, this bridge looks like the one from a fairytale. At this place, at first, there was a wooden bridge, built in 1862. That year, for the first time in the history, the military and civil part of the town were joined. In 1934, the bridge, as we see it now, was built out of bricks and stone. It was finally closed for traffic in 2010, for the vehicles weighing more than two tons.
The **Old Capitol **is the city's classicist heritage, located on the Ban Josip Jelačić square, and near the **Old Bridge. **It was built in 1830, and in 1839, the first theatre show in whole **Croatia **was held there - "Juran and Sofija" by I. K. Sakcinski. Since 2009, this is the main seat of the Sisak diocese.
If you walk around two kilometers from the city center, you can reach The Old Town Fortress. It is well-preserved and known for a battle with the Turkish army in 1593. You can even see the exhibits in the name of that battle if you visit **Sisak **in June. In that period, you can also see some old games to be revived, together with tasting some of the old traditional dishes.
Visit **Sisak **and find your piece of heaven in a peaceful little town by the river Kupa. Sisak with its history and heritage will send you back in the noble times, so you will immediately wish to invent the time machine and go back in time.
We recommend to book your stays in Croatia in advance as it can get booked up quickly during certain periods. If you use this link , you pay the same price and we get a small commission - thanks for your support!
