Keeping my word and being loyal to my love for gastronomy, here I am: let’s continue the introduction of the best rural restaurants in Hungary – according to the Dining Guide organisation. In my previous article, I already revealed the most excellent catering units out of Budapest, so in case you would like to catch up, check out what to do if you’re hungry in Hungary’s countryside. However, if you’re up to date, I’ve prepared a few more members of the prominent top 10 list, that was announced at the start of 2019. We have two choices: either we believe the results of the responsible gastronomical organisation, or we start an individual investigation to find out which restaurants are our personal favourites. Anyhow, let’s get to know these worthy places, where you officially get** the finest food service for your money in the Hungarian provinces**.
To provide you with a summary of the podium, the very best country restaurant in Hungary can be found in Encs, called Anyukám Mondta. The runner-up has been Platán in Tata, while the bronze medalist is Kistücsök in Balatonszemes, that you can schedule in your bike trip around the biggest lake in Central Europe. But let’s move on!
This unique restaurant is a widely popular pearl in the city of Szeged, where the sun always shines. Tiszavirág restaurant takes on local values, while it is both traditional and creative. Aesthetic service, a wide variety of meat dishes, and an unmatched lunch menu characterise this magnificent catering unit. Last but not least, it has been selected as the* Innovative Kitchen of the Year in 2019*. In case you come to Szeged, my tip for you is to visit Ópusztaszer as well. This small town 30 kilometres from Szeged has the biggest hedge labyrinth in Europe, but you also have a chance to witness one of the most famous Hungarian paintings, a 15-meter-wide masterpiece.
Villány belongs to the principal wine regions in Hungary, where some of the most excellent and most famous Hungarian wines are made. Here, you can find Sauska restaurant, which from its very beginning, has been acknowledged for the cuisine of consistently high quality. Recently, they have turned towards rural Hungarian cuisine, reinterpreting traditional dishes with ease. The menu is accompanied by Sauska winery’s own products from Tokaj and Villány. By the way, if you are a dedicated wine lover, you should read more about Hungary’s less known but superb wineries.
In the neighbourhood of Tihany, the realm of lavenders, you can find one of my favourite cities at Lake Balaton, Balatonfüred. Füred, how we simply call it in Hungary, is not only famous for its green promenade Tagore but also for one of the most excellent catering units in the whole country. Sparhelt Bistro has been excelling on the northern shore of Balaton for years, according to the Dining Guide organization. The menu, which changes every month, lists down the dishes made from local *ingredients, *keeping up a certain level of quality. The restaurant, which is open all year round, is amongst the favourite spots to eat at Lake Balaton.
