**Get inspired by experimental art, design and architecture at this museum in the heart of Hasselt. **
More than just an art museum, this city gem is a “House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture”. ‘Z33’ refers to its former address, Zuivelmarkt 33, but it has since moved just up the street, to Bonnefantenstraat 1. It's known for giving space to up-and-coming artists, along with well-known creatives. Expect to be surprised and challenged by fresh artistic takes at the experimental exhibitions.
The museum is located in Hasselt’s historic beguinage district, which used to be the home to a community of religious women, beguines, who are best described as the relaxed version of nuns. Modern museum architecture melds into the old, brick buildings of the beguinage in a striking but complimentary way. It’s well designed and looks cool, which is what you’d hope for from a contemporary design and architecture museum.
In the mood for some more art? Head over to Modemuseum Hasselt for a dose of fashion history, it’s only a short catwalk away. Or, sample some local culture and check out the Jenever Museum, just behind Art Museum Z33, to learn about a Belgian alcohol beverage that isn’t beer.
