A 14th century castle known for its French garden, beautiful interior, and massive library.
Beloeil has sometimes been called the Versailles of Belgium for its Baroque gardens and pretty castle. It’s worth dropping by for a visit in the Spring & Summer to see the gardens and castle interior for its bougie look and history. The castle also hosts a local festival in August - the Les féeries de Belœil features circus shows, music and more.
The Gardens
Beloeil has 25 hectares of gardens to stroll. The gardens are in French style, featuring tons of roses, ponds, trees, hedges and a nice view of the castle. Keep your eyes peeled! You might miss the small Greek columns in the Rieu d’Amour otherwise. They were made in the 18th century by Prince Charles-Joseph.
Beloeil also has a bowling green. The Bowling green might look like a long regular stretch of grass, but it was once used by the nobility to host theatre shows and games back in the 17th century. These days, it’s just a nice place to walk.
The Castle
Beloeil Castle is a 14th century castle home to a beautiful variety of sights to see. The castle is well-maintained with authentic décor. This castle was the home to the Prince of Ligne and still has bits of his life in the castle.
Right as you enter the hall, you’ll see a bust of the prince, a sculptor and the Empress of Russia. What a mix. In our opinion, the room after the hall (the Marshal’s Room) is probably the prettiest in the castle thanks to its white and gold walls and fancy décor.
Bookworms and history buffs shouldn’t miss the castle’s library. Beloeil ‘s library has over 20,000 thousands books. Soak in that lovely book smell and aesthetic!
