**A pretty church in the pretty village of Celles, Saint Hadelin is a hidden gem with some historic features. **

Tucked into the quiet village of Celles, the church of St. Hadelin stands out for its Romanesque architecture and crypts from times long gone. Celles is known to be one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia, so it’s worth coming by and taking a peek at the church while you’re here.

St. Hadelin is actually one of the major heritage sites of Wallonia, but it’s not so well known compared to many other churches in the region. A hidden gem with lovely architecture in a charming village - what more do you need?

The church dates back to the 11th century and it has some interesting historical bits to see.

  • Saint Hadelin lived in Celles back in the 7th century. The village celebrates their patron saint on the 3rd of February or the following Sunday. In the church, you’ll see a statue of him from the 15th century.
  • The eastern crypt is worth checking out for history buffs. The vaulted room also has a primitive altar. This is where pilgrims back in the 11th century came to pray.
  • The church has a few tombstones, including the final resting place of French-Dutch historian Louis de Beaufort and Marie de Boulant, his wife.
