Check out these beautiful French-style Belle Epoque Villas from the 1800s.
Located in De Haan, this quaint residential area boasts some beautiful architectural homes worth checking out. Start in the centre of town at Albertlaan and walk towards the beach to see the major highlights like the 100 villas commissioned by King Leopold II back in the 19th century. What you’ll notice is that these houses are built similarly, which can be seen in the designs of the balconies, railings, and even in the roof windows.
The residential area of De Haan has been a protected landscape since 1995. Some of the houses there have been declared as monuments from as early as 1981! Curious about how this area became protected? There’s an open-aired exhibition at La Pontiere Park that explains it all.
Fun fact: Theoretical physicist Albert Einstein lived in De Haan for a couple of months!
