The Great Beguinage is the biggest beguinage in Mechelen. Beguinages were small communities of Christian women who followed similar rules of a nunnery, although the vows weren’t official or for life. The women in this beguinage of Mechelen made a living by making and selling lace, which Mechelen was known for throughout history.

Strolling along these historic streets is a real treat. Most beguinages are still apart from the city, closed off and kept as pieces of history. But Groot is part of Mechelen in every way. Over time new houses have popped up and locals have moved in. Walk down these cobbled streets to see how Mechelen has grown.
