Relax in the city park of Hanssens. Bring the kids along to the playground or cycle around the park in the fresh air.

Hanssens is a cozy city park. Favoured by families, joggers and dog walkers, there’s plenty of room to play but not too much nature to see. If that’s more your thing, try the nearby Tangebeekbos and Domain Three Fountains. But if you’re here for exercise and a day out with the kids, Hanssens is for you. The park has a large pond packed with swans and a big adventure playground for kids!

  • Cyclist friendly: there’s a cycling path running through the park, pretty flat and easy going for beginners and experienced cyclists alike. The park isn’t that big and gets pretty busy in the summer.
  • Dogs welcome: bring your best bud! Hanssens has plenty of space and dogs are allowed off the leash to roam free.
  • Kid friendly: Hanssens has a large adventure playground for young kids.
  • History bits: Named after the mayor of Vilvoorde, Edmond Hanssens, Hanssens Park is the oldest park in the city. There’s a statue to King Albert I of Belgium on Koepoortstraat from the 1950s. Going even further back though, there was once a medieval moat here. While you can’t see it today, it does show how old this place is.
  • Fun fact: the park features in the Flemish TV series D5R about high school students in Belgium.
