Welcome to the heart of literature in Antwerp. This library is named after Hendrik Conscience, who’s basically the father of Flemish literature. They house over a million books in the Baroque style building. Basically, this library is so steeped in the dark academia aesthetic that you’ll feel like you’re in another world.

Their main collection covers everything about Dutch literature, local folklore, works about Antwerp, plus history and art of the Netherlands. The vast majority of these books are in Dutch! Even if you can’t read Dutch wandering down this library is still a treat.

The library is only open to the public during exhibitions and lectures. They’ve done lectures and events on everything from social media to Flemish literature.

  • The Nottebohm Room is heaven for book lovers. While you’re walking down the hall of dark wooden bookcases you’ll feel like you’re in a novel. This is where they keep the first 150,000 items of the library. You can only see it during special events so get those tickets fast
  • At the end of the Nottebohm Room you’ll see two globes on display. They’re about 400 years old and designed by Dutch cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu. Definitely worth a look while you’re there
  • They don’t loan out books but you can use their reading room. Curious about what they’ve got to offer? You can browse their collection on their website Some of their books are available to read digitally
  • The library happens to be a short walk away from the gorgeous St. Charles Borromeo Church. Go stretch your legs after a reading session by walking up the cathedral tower’s 500+ steps
