Seek out one of the best viewpoints in Leuven hidden in the park of Keizersberg Abbey.

Most of us when visiting Leuven head over to the library for the best views of the city. But did you know that’s not your only option? Keizersberg Abbey has the highest point of Leuven and some awesome views of the city. It does take a bit more effort to get to though compared to the library!

The monastery is a 19th century abbey built by monks where people used to go to pray. These days, the abbey is just student accommodation. We imagine some students still pray to pass their exams, though!

Keizersberg Abbey can only be visited by appointment. People come here for the views really, not to explore the actual building. From up here, you’ll get a pretty view of the whole city. The hill isn’t exactly super high, but it’s just enough to see the city. It’s one of the best viewpoints for photos of Leuven.

  • Although the park is free, Keizersberg Abbey’s park has quite a few fences that block some views. There are some holes in the fence and ways around it if you need to as the park isn’t strictly maintained. In our experience, the park workers aren’t too fussed if people come over the fence but obviously would prefer that you didn’t.
  • History: Caesar. The Roman guy, not the salad! A long, long time ago this hill was home to the castle Mont Caesar. And in the 12th century the Knights Templar built a base here too. These bits of history have been demolished and all that remains is the 19th century building.
