Feeling fancy? Laeken park offers great picnic spaces with a great view of the royal castle!
Laeken park can be found between the royal castle and the Atomium. The park offers amazing views of the Dynasty Monument, the American theatre, and a great close-up of the Atomium. This green sanctuary was created in ‘English Style’ by Edouard Keilig in the 19th century, the same architect who designed Bois de la Cambre. He included flowerbeds, wide lawns, and broad avenues for people who enjoy taking afternoon strolls.
The park was commissioned by King Leopold II, who hired Keilig to design the layout of the park close to the palace. Once the park was completed, Leopold transferred the land to the Belgian state. After his death in the 90s, the park became a part of the Royal Trust (which is all the lands and castles King Leopold II gave the nation after his death).
While you’re there, make sure to keep an eye out for any rare American chestnut trees (Tip: they’ve got yellow flowers!). The park is also home to many other amazing plant species like the Virginia Tulip and the Butternut Hickory.
