Struggling to choose between the beach and mountains? No need. Hit the beach in the Ardennes at this lake of activities.

There’s something for everyone at Lake Bütgenbach. The 300-acre lake was created by the Warche dam and now serves as a hub of leisure and recreation for those looking for both forest AND sand!

VENNtastic Beach

Sitting comfortably on the south-east banks of the lake with 8,000m² of sandy beach, you’ll feel like you shut your eyes and woke up on the coast. This spacious spot has heaps to offer alongside its 150m of sunbathing territory for all ages to enjoy their day in the sun.

Take a dip in the large supervised swimming area which includes a paddling pool for the little kids and large anchored playing equipment for maximum fun vibes. Head further out into a lake by renting a sit-on-top kayak or pedal boat. When you’re out of the water, there’s playgrounds to explore along with a huge arena for beach volleyball and beach soccer. It comes complete with a stand for spectators so you’ll feel like the next (insert famous beach volleyball player - come on, you don’t know one either, do you?)! Starting to rain? No problem! There’s even an indoor pool...

Activities, Activities! If all that wasn’t enough, there are tons of other activities on offer at the lake both on water and solid ground.

  • Water activities: you’ll never get bored with the choice of kayaking, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and stand-up-paddle boarding. If you fancy fishing, make sure you buy a license first from the reception at Worriken sports and leisure centre.
  • On dry land: Hiking and biking are super common in the surrounding areas. A popular hike is the 10.5km Tour of Lake Bütgenbach which shows off a mix of landscapes through forests, meadows and of course, along the shores of the lake. Click here for the route and signage.

If you’d like more information about the activities Worriken offers on and around Lake Bütgenbach, you can find them all here.

Keen for more lake days? You’ll find Lake Robertville a short drive away up the Warche river with a beach and swimming area of its own!
