Antwerp’s botanical garden has been around since the 1800s. It started as a medical garden for the local hospital, but now it’s a great little park to relax in the city. Walk around this free to visit cosy little park and you’ll see about 2000 species of plants. The botanical garden has more cacti in their green houses than a Pinterest board.

This is one of the best spots in Antwerp to sit and enjoy a good book. Come and find peace and quiet without even leaving the heart of the city.

• Plants are all around the park but you’ll find most of the exotic plants in their green houses
• There’s a bunch of art like statues and old houses dotted around the park, so it’s got even more character than you’d expect
• Fun fact: people say they kept leeches in the pond for the hospital, but thankfully these days you’ll only find fish.
• The botanical garden’s main entrance gate was actually designed by Antwerp’s architect Pierre Bruno Bourla
• It’s a small and cozy park, so good for short walks but if you’re looking for more than that then maybe check out one of the bigger parks instead on the outskirts of town like Rivierenhof or terboelarenpark.
