A desert in Belgium? Yes, this sand-filled landscape of desert Lommel is the closest you'll get to the real thing.

Explore the unexpected sandbox of désert de Lommel by foot and admire some interesting scenery along the way. At the starting point, you’ll see a map and have a choice of 3 different walking routes across the desert sahara.

Wallking Routes

  • Blue (3km): This 45 minute walk is designed for kids. Along the way is a play forest where they'll enjoy playing in a giant sandpit. Stop for a picnic at Zeno Zandloopkever's play picnic tables.
  • Orange (6km): Experience the best of the are on this easy walk which should take around an hour and a half.
  • Red (12km): Spend a morning or afternoon exploring one of the most beautiful places in Limburg. See dunes, lakes and heathland on this 3 hour hike.

You’ll start out walking through more greener landscapes and then slowly the surface will start being more sandy until you’re in the middle of a tiny desert! Stop and enjoy the surroundings and then stroll further to the “Lommel Tower”, a 30 meter high tower that gives you a panoramic view of the unique landscape.

The architecture of the tower was inspired by the rolling landscape of the real Lommel Sahara dunes; to emulate this, the architects used over 3.5km of natural ropes due to its natural colours and texture. The ropes are folded all around the geometric tower to highlight the soft natural lines of the ropes juxtaposed with stark angles.

Bring your mountain bikes

Limburg's very own desert isn't just great for hiking but its a fun place to explore by bike. Mountain bikers will enjoy navigating the dunes and sandy landscape. Most mountain biking routes in and around Lommel will take you through Sahara Lommel.
