From April 30, 1980, a group of theological students began in Porto Alegre to collect and catalog the pieces found in convents, houses and churches belonging to Capuchinhano Order of Rio Grande do Sul.

The Museum of the Capuchins (MUSCAP) began unofficially on March 25, 1980 and was called at that time: Etrém de Bellevaux Anthropological-Religious Museum of the Capuchin Friars Minor Province of Rio Grande do Sul.

The current name is a simplification of the original name. Brother Efrém de Bellevaux is honored by the object symbol of the museum, a frame of wood made by him in 1910.
