Discover the Enchanting Pozos Azules de Villa de Leyva

Nestled in the picturesque Colombian countryside, just a short distance from the colonial town of Villa de Leyva, lies a hidden gem known as Pozos Azules. This unique natural wonder consists of seven stunning pools, each boasting vibrant shades of blue that are sure to captivate any visitor.

A Natural Wonder

The story of Pozos Azules began almost thirty years ago when the first pool was built. Over time, thanks to the presence of selenium, sulfur, and other minerals in the rainwater drains, the pools have acquired their distinctive blue hues. It takes approximately five years for each pool to obtain its vibrant color, making them a true testament to the wonders of nature.

Exploring the Pools

While swimming is not allowed in the pools due to their high mineral content, a leisurely walk along the easy trail surrounding Pozos Azules offers a chance to admire their beauty up close. As you stroll through the arid landscapes, be sure to pack sun cream, a hat, and plenty of water, as shade is scarce along the trail.

Getting There

To reach Pozos Azules, take Carrera 12 out of Villa de Leyva, starting next to the Selina Hostel. After approximately 2 km, you'll find the park entrance on your left-hand side. If you have your own vehicle, parking is available. Bike hire is also an option, which can be cost-efficient if you plan to visit other nearby attractions such as the Terracotta House.

When to Visit

Villa de Leyva experiences its driest months from December to February, making this period ideal for exploring Pozos Azules. From March to November, there is a higher chance of rainfall, so it's advisable to check the weather forecast in advance. Regardless of the season, the unique landscapes surrounding the pools offer a breathtaking backdrop for memorable photos.

More Than Just Pools

While Pozos Azules may be the main attraction, Villa de Leyva has much more to offer. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Plaza Mayor, a colonial-style square with its iconic stone flooring and a central fountain. The square is home to the City Hall offices, museums, hotels, and shopping passages, all showcasing the town's original architecture.

For history enthusiasts, the Museo Paleontológico is a must-visit. Housed in a stunning colonial building dating back to 1570, this paleontology museum displays fossils from the Cretaceous period. With over 2,400 pieces in its collection, including 441 exhibited pieces, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's ancient past.

A Unique Experience

While Pozos Azules may not be the most adrenaline-pumping activity, it offers a unique and affordable experience that can be enjoyed in just an hour. The pools' mesmerizing colors, combined with the breathtaking landscapes, create a tranquil and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Whether you're a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Pozos Azules de Villa de Leyva is a destination that should not be missed.
