The city theater and cultural institution called the National Theater in Pula was founded on March 9, 1948, and is located in a multipurpose but above all a theater building, the name given to it, Politeama Ciscutti.

The first director of the National Theater in Pula was Miljenko Paravić. The first premiere of Držić's Dunda Maroja, the National Theater in Pula, began on January 22, 1949.

After 23 seasons of the 213 premiers (199 theatrical and 14 opera titles) 125 authors (66 foreign and 59 domestic) and played 2,050 performances, the Liquidation Committee of the Municipal Assembly of Pula on 29 April 1971 (the Chairman of the Committee is the last director of the Istrian People's theaters, actor and director Ljudevit Crnobori) makes a decision about cessation of the work of the Istrian National Theater as an institution.

The Puljani had waited for eighteen years, and they finally received the solemn opening on May 5, 1989 by the performance of Gotovč's opera Ero from that of the HNK from Zagreb. Since 1994, the theater has been known as the Istrian National Theater - Kazališna kuća Pula, and since 2004 the Istrian National Theater - Pula City Theater.
