**Spectacularly gothic, this UNESCO-listed church took over 500 years to build and is a must see when visiting Kutna Hora! **
The Sedlec Ossuary isn’t the only thing worth seeing in Kutna Hora. With its circus-like roof and gothic facade, St Barbara’s Cathedral is an architectural gem and one of the country’s most precious UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Taking a staggering 500 years to build, the Cathedral is totally unique both inside and out. Its striking gothic facade with 20 tall pillars makes it hard not to miss amongst the city’s skyline. Its grandeur and rich interior stands testament to the city’s former wealth in silver mining. In fact, the church is consecrated to the patron saint of all miners, Saint Barbara.
Despite being called a Cathedral, St Barbara’s is a Roman Catholic Church and has never been given the status of Cathedral, despite having a grand cathedral-like appearance. Just like the church’s exterior, its interior is just as beautiful and just as unique.
The biggest tragedy is that few people ever bother going inside. While there is nothing of “great-significance” to see inside there are a number of rare Gothic frescoes and Renaissance paintings depicting the life of the medieval mining town and a wonderful vaulted ceiling. Although there are guided tours in English available, you’d be more than satisfied with the small English leaflet that can be picked up inside the church if you happen to be super interested in the various sculptures, altars and paintings.
