An impressive 20th-century water tower overlooking Domburg’s beaches and the North Sea.
You can’t miss Domburg’s iconic landmark. At almost 30 meters tall, this official state monument towers (pun very much intended) over the town. You’ll find it perched on top of the dunes of the pretty De Manteling nature reserve on the way towards Oostkapelle.
Apart from being an impressive sight, the water tower doesn’t have much else to offer. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public. The tower is privately owned and has been converted into two apartments. You can’t get too close to it either, so we recommend snapping some pics from afar and heading to the beach.
History of Watertoren van Domburg
The brick tower was designed in 1933 by Hendrik Sangster. Quenching the thirst of Domburg, the building could store 200 m3 of water that came from the nearby Oranjezon, a beautiful natural area. It was badly damaged during WWII and, in 1997, became an official monument. A family from Amerstdam bought the tower in 2004 and have owned it ever since.
Tips and Tricks
- You won’t be able to get super close to the tower, as it is privately owned. You can enjoy it from a distance and it makes for a unique backdrop to a photo!
Getting There
- By Car: there is plenty of parking in Domburg. All parking will be within a 15 minute walk of the tower.
- By Bus: from Middelburg take bus 52. Get off at Villapark, it’s a short walk to the tower.
