history: By 1969, the Minister of Culture, André Malraux, decided to build a museum to preserve the Biblical message after his donation to the state. This began in 1970 on a large lot, offered by the City of Nice, which was built a villa of the early century in ruins.
Chagall following with interest the project: it is he who asks an auditorium is part of the planned facilities. He also wants to expand the building by adding the windows of the auditorium and a mosaic that modifies the Museum Road.
In 1973, the artist is present for the inauguration of the National Museum Biblical Message Marc Chagall, André Malraux and the Minister of Culture of the time, Maurice Druon.
Until his death in 1985, Marc Chagall accompanied the early years of the institution's life. It is present to exhibition openings and launches, thanks to its friendly relations, a prestigious concerts policy.
After the death of Chagall, the Museum enjoys the filing of an important part of the dation (procedure which allows the payment in artworks inheritance rights. The Chagall dation featured more than 300 works). New acquisitions gradually enrich the collections and, with the support of the heirs of the painter, the museum is monographic full, reflecting both the spirituality of the artist's work and its inclusion in the artistic movements of the twentieth century.
In 2005, the museum thus changes its name to Marc Chagall National Museum.
