Heligoland

With about 82 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany's capital and largest metropolis is Berlin, while its largest conurbation is the Ruhr, with its main centres of Dortmund and Essen. The country's other major cities are Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Bremen, Dresden, Hannover, and Nuremberg. Elevation ranges from the mountains of the Alps in the south to the shores of the North Sea in the northwest and the Baltic Sea  in the northeast. The forested uplands of central Germany and the lowlands of northern Germany are traversed by such major rivers as the Rhine, Danube and Elbe. Germany's alpine glaciers are experiencing deglaciation. When thinking of Germany, beer, lederhosen and Alpine hats quickly come to mind, but these stereotypes mostly relate to Bavarian culture and do not represent Germany as a whole. Germany is a vast and diverse country with 16 culturally unique states that have been politically united since 1871. Even within states there is often considerable cultural diversity.

Germany

It is the only state where 3 languages are used, namely German, Low German and Danish. Its capital city is Kiel; other notable cities are Lübeck and Flensburg. Schleswig-Holstein is mainly a maritime region, with ports on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Its largest port, Lübeck, is the historic capital of the Hanseatic League, which controlled commerce in much of northern Europe between the 13th and 17th centuries. And with these two seas: the wind, the watt, the waves, the tides here punctuate life. An ideal holiday spot for families, lovers of water sports and nature. In this land, there is a wide range of activities designed for everyone: children, teens, young people, adults, amateur athletes, professional athletes. The sites to visit are the 'North Frisian Islands' region, the largest park in Holstein Switzerland, the world-class resort of Travemünde, the lakes of Lauenbourg, national park of the 'Schleswig-Holstein foreshore', the long Schlei Bay, the canal linking the North Sea to the Baltic, the island of Heligoland, hotels on the North Sea and the Baltic, beaches, forests.

Schleswig-Holstein

The Museum Helgoland deals with the natural history and the local history of the Helgoland island. It is supported by the foundation founded in 1996. A first museum on Heligoland had already been opened in 1899, but was destroyed on 18 October 1944, when the bird collection Heinrich Gätkes was the main attraction.
