Nestled in the picturesque Rhine valley, the Boosenburg Castle in Rüdesheim am Rhein is a hidden gem that will transport you back in time. Dating back to the 12th century, this lowland castle is steeped in history and offers visitors a glimpse into the region's rich heritage. Let's explore the captivating features and experiences that await you at this remarkable destination.

A Historical Marvel

The Boosenburg Castle, also known as Oberburg (upper castle), has witnessed centuries of fascinating history. Originally built as the family seat for Lord Fuchs of Rüdesheim, the castle's square structure surrounded a towering double-stepped bergfried, providing protection with its rampart and moat. Over time, additional living quarters were added, and in 1407, it came under the ownership of the Brömser von Rüdesheim noble family. From 1474 to 1830, the castle belonged to the Boos von Waldeck noble family.

Architectural Marvels

While the castle has undergone transformations throughout the centuries, its architectural features continue to captivate visitors. In 1836, the counts of Schönborn-Wiesntheid demolished all buildings except for the bergfried, which they extended and adorned with Gothic Revival merlons. The moat was transformed into a vaulted wine cellar by wine merchant Baptist Sturm's widow. In 1872, a stunning Gothic Revival villa, designed by Philipp Hoffmann, was erected on the premises.

Wine, Music, and More

Since 1938, the Boosenburg Castle has been owned by the renowned winery, Weinkellerei Carl Jung. The castle's musical heritage is also noteworthy, with the musical family hosting chamber music concerts in their residence. The venue has witnessed performances by notable musicians, including Hans Otto Jung, a founding member of the jazz group Hotclub Combo. Today, the castle continues to be a hub for cultural events, including concerts organized by the Volkshochschule (VHS, folk high school).
