The new building of the Erfurt Theater was opened in 2003 and is one of the most modern venues in Europe. The opera house of the Thuringian capital is just a stone's throw away from the medieval ensemble of Mariendom and Severikirche and the baroque fortress of Petersberg. The approximately 480 events a year - opulent operas and operettas, festive concerts, sophisticated drama productions and more - are a hit with culture lovers from near and far.

Far beyond the borders of Thuringia and Germany, the DomStufen Festival has also made a name for itself. Year after year in the summer, the Erfurt Theater stages this special open-air spectacle against the breathtaking backdrop of St. Mary's Cathedral, where Martin Luther was once ordained, and turns the 70 steps of Domberg into an opera or musical stage. Guy Montavon is responsible for the artistic work of the opera house. Caring for the contemporary operatic repertoire is of particular concern to him. Its premiere cycle with a world premiere each year gives the Erfurt Theater national and international recognition and leads the ensemble around the world: Erfurt productions have already been acclaimed in Austin, Amsterdam or London.
