The Dhauligiri Hill is home to rock edicts of the great King Ashoka of the ancient Maurya Empire. It is here that Ashoka fought the Kalinga war of 265 BCE and then renounced warfare to embrace Buddhism. There are many Buddhist shrines built by Ashoka at Dhauligiri. The main attraction, however, is the Dhauli Shanti Stupa (peace pagoda) built in 1972. The Shanti Stupa remains open from 7 AM to 7 PM. © Wikimedia Commons/ Debashis Pradhan
