Kaliurang observation post, Mt. Merapi, Central Java

Kaliurang is a village on the southern slope of Mt. Merapi. In recent years, it has been developed for volcano tourism, and a watchtower has been built to observe the eruptions. The lay of the land protects Kaliurang from pyroclasms, although there's no such thing as absolute safety when it comes to active volcanoes. © Mark Levitin
