If you're looking for a unique and historical experience in Cork, look no further than the iconic Shandon Bells & Tower. Located in the Shandon district of the city, this historic church and tower offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Cork's rich history and enjoy breathtaking views of the city and beyond.

A Tower with a View

One of the main attractions of Shandon Bells & Tower is the opportunity to climb the 132 steps to the top of the tower. As you ascend, you'll pass by the famous clocks, known locally as "the four-faced liar," which may not always agree on the exact time. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a 360-degree view of Cork city and its surroundings. The tower's red sandstone and white ashlar limestone exterior make it a striking landmark visible from many parts of the city.

The Melodious Bells

The bells of Shandon are an integral part of Cork's cultural heritage. Cast by Abel Rudhall of Gloucester in 1750, these bells have been recast twice since then but still bear their original inscriptions. Weighing over 6 tonnes altogether, the bells are known for their beautiful sound and are featured in the popular 19th-century song, "The Bells of Shandon" by Francis Sylvester Mahony. Visitors have the unique opportunity to ring the bells themselves, creating a melodic symphony that echoes through the city.

A Place of Worship and History

St. Anne's Church, which houses the Shandon Bells & Tower, is not only a significant ecclesiastical structure but also one of the most important early 18th-century churches in Ireland. Built in 1722, it replaced a previous church that was destroyed during the Siege of Cork in 1690. The church's architecture is a blend of red sandstone from the original Shandon Castle and limestone from the derelict Franciscan Abbey. Its distinct colors are said to have inspired the sporting colors of Cork.
