Lanciano Castle was built in 1489 by Giovanna Malatesta, who transformed the old Rocca (1382-85) into a country residence. Over the centuries, several families lived in the castle until, in 1753, Pope Benedict XIV tresferì the Castle to the Treasurer of the State of Camerino Alessandro Bandini. In 1815, the Bandini, originating in Florence, joined the Giustiniani in Rome and the last descendant of the new Giustiniani-Bandini was Princess Maria Sofia, who used to spend his summers at the castle until his death on April 30 1977.

The Castle of Lanciano is also surrounded by a large park that can be used for picnics, walks and relaxation along the river Potenza.
