The Regional Nature Reserve of Doberdò and Pietrarossa lakes was established by the Regional Law n ° 42 of 30 September 1996 (art. 48). The reserve lies on the Karst of Gorizia for most of the municipalities of Doberdò del Lago, Monfalcone and Ronchi of the Legionaries.

The main feature of this reserve is the presence of two large karstic depressions (polje) host two lakes separated by limestone hills. As the Karst region is set to scale, highly permeable carbonate rock, all the territory lacks surface water hydrography being confined underground. Consequently, the presence of the lakes contrasts the surrounding dryness and allows the development of typical wetland ecosystems rarely seen around the Karst, which give the area protected a high degree of biodiversity.

Walking along the paths of this protected area will then have the opportunity to observe the transition from habitat of arid environments, such as moor grass or the furrowed fields, those of wetlands surrounding the lakes. On the hill M. Castellazzo, which rises above the lake of Doberdò, is the Gradina Visitor Center Museum in which the visitor has the opportunity to retrace, through interactive tools, historical and natural aspects of the Reserve and the Karst region. The property features a bar, a restaurant and a cozy guesthouse with 20 beds.
