The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, overlooking the central Piazza De Nava and a short distance from the entrance of the promenade 'I. Falcomatà "is a designed building, among the first in Italy, solely for the purpose of exposure museum; It is the work of Marcello Piacentini, one of the greatest architects of the fascist period, which in a modern conceived after visiting the main museums of Europe.

The establishment of a state museum was sponsored by Superintendent Paul Orsi, who intended to unify the objects preserved in the Museum organized by the city since 1882 together with the result of the findings of the excavations he conducted on Calabrian soil. Opened in 1959, the Museum has undergone over the years, of bulk transformations, such as the setting up, in 1981, the underwater archeology section, which was necessary to give adequate visibility to the famous Riace bronzes unearthed in 1972 as well as the construction industry on the second floor devoted to the colonies of Magna Grecia.
