The rectangular square has always been one of the largest intellectual gatherings of the city because it is surrounded by many university campuses and very close to the Academy of Fine Arts and the Conservatory of St. Peter at Majella, where important national composers studied To which Vincenzo Bellini, named after the whole slargo, is represented in the square with a statue of Alfonso Balzico of 1886 placed in the center.

The square is surrounded by monumental palaces of the 16th and 17th centuries that make important impressions of Renaissance and Baroque Neapolitan art such as Castriota Scanderbeg Palace or Firrao Palace. On the south side there is the Complex of St. Anthony of the Nuns at Port'Alba, now the headquarters of the faculty of "Lettere e filosofia", while on the opposite side there is the De Rossi palace of Castelpetroso (also known as Palazzo Mastellone). Finally, the west side dominates what was once the palace of the Princes of Conca, built in the late 15th century and still showing some original architectural emergencies on the facade.

Finally, in the western limit there are some remains of the Greek Neapolis walls, discovered in part in 1954 and later in 1984.
