A medieval stronghold built on a mountaintop with a view of the Sure River.
The mediaeval castle known as Bourscheid Castle, or Château de Bourscheid, is situated in the village of Bourscheid in northeastern Luxembourg. The castle has a long and rich history; it was built in the tenth century by the counts of Ardennes, who ruled during the Middle Ages. It was initially constructed as a fortification to defend the area against attack and functioned for many centuries as a crucial strategic bastion. In the 15th century, the castle was sold to the Lords of Brandenbourg.
They added a chapel, residential buildings, and other features to make the castle more comfortable to live in. In the 16th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Nassau family, who were one of the most powerful noble families in Europe at the time. They continued to improve and modernise the castle, adding gunpowder defences and other features. During the 17th century, Bourscheid Castle fell into decline and was eventually abandoned. It was used as a quarry for building materials and fell into ruin. In the 20th century, the castle was restored to its former glory and is now open to visitors.
Being a well-liked tourist destination and a reminder of Luxembourg's rich cultural past, Bourscheid Castle is still standing today. The Great Hall, the dungeons, and the old occupants' quarters are among the numerous chambers and corridors that guests can visit. Also, the castle contains a number of exhibits and displays that provide information about the history of the building and the daily lives of those who once resided there. Bourscheid Castle is renowned for its spectacular views of the surrounding countryside in addition to its historical value. Visitors can see beautiful panoramas in all directions from the castle, which is perched on a mountaintop overlooking the Sûre River and the surrounding forested hills.
