The only cathedral in Luxembourg and noteworthy for multiple styles of architecture.
The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin was originally a Jesuit church constructed between 1613-1621 to serve as a church to their college. The design is a beautiful example of the late Gothic style, and the north gate has characteristics of the Renaissance/Baroque style of the period.
The exterior of the Cathedral is made from sandstone and is decorated with Gothic elements like sculpted figures. When the Jesuits left Luxembourg in 1773, they gifted the church to the city.
The Cathedral was enlarged and completed in its current form between 1935-1938. With multiple neo-Gothic confessionals, beautiful stained glass, and striking columns decorated with arabesques is perfect for anyone interested in art or Gothic-style architecture. The church became a cathedral in 1870 when Luxembourg became a bishopric. The Cathedral's crypt is the final resting place of the Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses of Luxembourg.
