A place to honour those who gave their lives so we could have a better future.
The Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial is the resting place of over 5,000 service members who died in World War II. The Cemetery consists of nine sections and reminds us of the high cost of war. Fountains, trees, and rose and rhododendron beds are dispersed throughout to honour the fallen soldiers with a form of tranquillity.
Not only is there a cemetery, but there are also sculptures, monuments, a memorial wall and a chapel that are open to the public.
The Cemetery lies just outside the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The wrought-iron gates support two gilded laurel wreaths, the ancient award for valour. Many of the service members were airmen that passed on in flights over the area or soldiers that died in the Ardennes Campaign and the advance to the Rhine River.
The Cemetery was established in 1945 and spans for 22-acres and is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
