Learn about how the city of Amsterdam developed and how it is still developing.

Learn about the history, the present and the future of the city of Amsterdam at the Amsterdam Museum. The museum tells the story on how Amsterdam has shaped and developed, and how it is still developing.

The museum exhibits more than 100.000 items of the history of the city, collected over almost five centuries. It is a very diverse collection, from regent portraits and cityscapes to the wedding rings of the world’s first gay wedding.

There are big as well as smaller exhibitions that tell these stories, permanent ones and temporary ones. They go from stories such as Welcome to the Northside to Colonial Stories. There is even a part for children, where they learn about Amsterdam in a playful way.
