You step out of a train, you get out of the marvellous train station Amsterdam Centraal and the first thing that catches your eye is this remarkable building right opposite to where you are now. Visit the Basilica of St Nicholas!
It was built between 1884 and 1887, so it's pretty recent than other churches. The architect, A. Bleijs designed it using a combination of different revival styles, mostly the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance style.
One of the highlights of this basilica is certainly the organ, which was built by the leading German organ builder Wilhelm Sauer in 1889. What's so special about this organ is that it's the only work of Sauer on Dutch soil and one of the few that kept their original state.
Don't let yourself intimidate from the rather dark interior, because there's plenty of stunning decorations, mural paintings and sculptures. And yes, of course, stained-glass. What are you waiting for?
