With a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, this is a diverse museum that is interesting for all ages.
The Centraal Museum Utrecht is the main museum of the city. Opened in 1838, the museum has a great collection of paintings that were produced locally. This museum also owns the Miffy Museum and the Rietveld Schröder House.
Centraal Museum Utrecht has temporary exhibitions, as well as a permanent collection. In the past they showcased exhibitions such as Modern Love (or Love in the age of Cold Intimacies), Voices of Fashion, Dick Bruna and Utrecht: Forever Together and MOED: What is left unseen.
The permanent collection consists of Studio Dick Bruna and Utrecht’s ancient ship. Dick Bruna’s studio is interesting for all Miffy fans. Miffy is from Utrecht and she is seen in different parts of the city (such as the Miffy Traffic Lights, the Miffy Square and the Miffy Museum). Though the Miffy Museum is more focused on children, this part of the museum is interesting if you want to know more about Dick Bruna, the creator of Miffy. In the studio you can see loads of personal details, about how he worked, what kind of materials he used and where he got his inspiration from.
Utrecht’s ancient ship can be seen at the museum as well. It has been on display since 1936, and was discovered six years before that. It is known for its peculiar smell, which is because of the conservation method that is used to keep it intact.
