Blink and you'll miss it - even though this stunning spot is right in the centre, it's easy to pass by!

This 19th-century passageway is located in-between a busy area of Amsterdam. The passage connects the main artery of Damrak street to Nieuwendijk street. Ornate in appearance, take your time strolling down the passageway to take in the nautical-themed art imprinted on the Italian glass ceiling, mosaic tiles, and walls. It's designed so that you would feel like you're underwater, an impression of what it would be like under a canal. Chandeliers are hung-up above the walkway, illuminating the green and yellow mosaics.

  • The huge anchor artwork on the floor is called Oersoep, by Dutch artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.
  • The artwork is a tribute to the canals of Amsterdam - so keep your eyes out for bicycles, boat parts, and umbrella designs in the passageway, as those items are often fished out of the city's waterways!

Tips and Tricks

  • Don't miss out on the gigantic fish head! You'll see that it has an open mouth, and lit in a red glow. This is where you can stick your water bottle in its mouth and refill your water for free! When you do refill, the glow will turn blue.
  • Below the fish ornament, you can read "Take some Mokum with you" engraved on the tiles. 'Mokum' is a nickname for Amsterdam.
  • The passageway is also a connecting arcade to a cafe where you can sit and people-watch as well as other shops.
