**A Dutch icon: a traditional windmill! No need to head to the countryside to see such a majestic heritage piece, this one is right in the city. **

De Gooyer Windmill was built in 1725 as a flour mill, and to this day is still the tallest windmill in Amsterdam (at 26.6 meters high!) The octagonal structural shape stands tall over the canal, where you can easily boat by and peer up at the windmill.

While De Gooyer Windmill doesn't function anymore as its original purpose and isn't open to the general public, there's now a much-beloved microbrewery (how still very Dutch) that is right at the bottom of the windmill. An alternative to international powerhouse Heiniken, the Amsterdam-brewed Brouwerij ’t IJ Brewery is a proud local beer of the city. You can enjoy it on the open terrace or inside the brewery below the windmill.
