**Find peace in this green oasis in the city centre of Utrecht. **
This garden has been around for a while: since 1723 De Oude Hortus has been situated at the Lange Nieuwstraat. The organisation and the wide-ranging plant collection were mostly influenced by medical and botanical science. In De Oude Hortus, the greenhouses stand out the most, while the peaceful pond is the heart of the garden.
The Regius garden and the Cottage garden are the two gardens that make up Utrecht's De Oude Hortus. The former is based on Hortus Medicus, a 17th-century garden in Utrecht that served mainly as a resource for teaching medical students about therapeutic plants. The latter has dwarf conifers, ponds, low walls, small staircases, and an alpine garden. There are many unusual plants and trees in the gardens to see in De Oude Hortus, the oldest university garden greenhouses in use in the Netherlands!
When visiting the garden, you can pick between two garden pathways. Along the trip, information about the various plants will be provided. A team of dedicated volunteers under the gardener's guidance care for the garden and work together to maintain De Oude Hortus’ lovely appearance all year long.
