Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, Depot Boijmans for short, or simply ‘The Depot’, is the first ever publicly accessible art storage facility. Did you know that most international museums exhibit less than 10% of their collections? Well, Depot Boijmans have got 99% of their 150,000-item strong collection on display for you to see!
Don’t expect an ordinary art gallery, items here are displayed as they would be in a museum’s storage facility. Art is arranged not by artist or era, but by climate. Also, get a sneak peek behind the scenes to see how art is restored, preserved and kept. See the art on display in the Atrium and in the 4 exhibition spaces.
- Guided Tours: Worried about missing the best bits if you go off exploring The Depot on your own? Then opt for a guided tour. A guide takes you into the special climate controlled storage facilities used to keep The Depot’s art in tip-top shape. This is a totally new and unique way to view all this art up close and personal.
- Incredible Architecture: Forget the 150000 pieces of art inside Depot Boijmans. The building itself is a work of art. Covered in reflective panels, the curved building is one giant warped mirror reflecting Rotterdam’s skyline right back at itself.
- Rooftop Restaurant & City Views: Hop in the express elevator to the tree-covered roof for panoramic views of Rotterdam. There is a rooftop restaurant, Restaurant Renilde, up there too, run by award winning chef Jim de Jong. This is an incredible spot for a tea or coffee, lunch, dinner and drinks.
- Location, location, location: There’s loads to do in the area around Museumpark with another 5 museums nearby, one of which is bound to tickle your fancy if The Depot doesn’t.
- Sustainable Travel Friendly: Sustainability was a big part of the building’s design and Restaurant Renilde is also doing its part. They use local and regionally sourced products and seasonal ingredients. We love finding sustainable things to do on our travels!
