**It was once the Netherlands’ biggest church, now it’s the most unique and majestic symbol of the city of Utrecht. Come to visit this stunning cathedral in gothic style and discover its peculiar history! **
The Dom Church, also called Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral, has a long history behind it. The city was born in Roman times and the very heart of the ancient fortress is where today the church stands.
The construction of the gothic church officially began in 1254, incorporating the two Romanesque churches from the medieval period, and was stopped in 1520, as a consequence of lack of money.
The church was never fully completed, and that explains also why the nave of the Cathedral collapsed after the town was severely hit by a tornado. It’s never been rebuilt again and this is perhaps what makes the site so evocative and unique.
What remains of the church are the choir, the transept and the Dom Tower, whereas the nave that collapsed is today a square, the so-called Domplein in Dutch, and if you look carefully, you will be able to see on the pavement the lines that indicate where the walls of the church stood before the fall.
We suggest you pair the visit to the Dom church with the one to the Dom Tower (click here to get more information about tickets and opening hours: Plan your visit to the Dom Tower in Utrecht | Dom Tower (domtoren.nl))
