At 121ft (37m) high, the Excalibur Climbing Wall takes first place as the tallest freestanding climbing tower in the whole world. It’s a long way to the top! The climbing wall can be found in the climbing centre of Bjoeks in Groningen. Put aside your expectations, because Excalibur is not a straight up wall. The climbing wall has a 36 foot curve in its structure, making it stand out from a distance. You’ll definitely see Exacilbur from afar on a visit to Groningen!
To begin your journey up the excalibur climbing wall, you’ll need the right equipment and a climbing partner. For a couple of euros, you can rent some climbing equipment at Klimcentrum Bjoeks including the necessary 80m of rope. Never been rock climbing before? We recommend doing a bit of guided climbing or an intro class before attempting Exacilbur! Klimcentrum Bjoeks offers basic courses and guided climbs to help get you started.
As you go up the Excalibur rock climbing wall, you’ll get a view of nearby Groningen. Really, though, the satisfaction of completing the wall is better than the view.
