Visit this unique museum in the heart of Zeeland. Learn about the North Sea flood of 1953 and how the Dutch engineered one of the most impressive water management systems in the world.
This museum is the site for the “National Knowledge and Remembrance Centre for the Floods of 1953”. Through a series of exhibits and videos, it tells the story of the devastating floods of February 1953 which killed over 2500 people and flooded almost 10 per cent of farmland in the Netherlands.
You also learn about the Delta Plan and the Delta Works, Zeeland’s huge flood defence system and water management strategy, which was created to prevent a similar disaster from happening again. One of the most revolutionary hydraulic engineering projects in the world, it shaped Zeeland’s landscape. If you’re in the area you’ll almost certainly have seen, walked or driven on something created by the Delta Plan, so it’s worth learning about this important part of the province’s history.
