This fort was an important part of the Dutch Water Line.

Built between 1868 and 1875, Fort Rhijnauwen is part of the Dutch Water Line (a formation of fortresses used as a defence system back in the day).

The fortress was further east of Utrecht and served to prevent or reduce artillery attacks on the city. In the event of a successful enemy attack, the retreating Dutch troops were incorporated into the fort. After regrouping, a possible Dutch offensive was again possible.

For years the fort was closed to the general public and became a paradise for plants and animals. In winter, bats hibernate here and throughout the rest of the year, there are weasels, foxes, grass snakes and many different butterflies.

Today, the fort can be visited on a guided tour.
