Stroll the beautiful gardens of Hortus Haren. See some surprises along the way like wild plants, art sculptures, and bees!

The botanical garden of Hortus Haren is only a few kilometres away from the city of Groningen. And we think the quick drive is well worth it! At 20 hectares large, this is one of the biggest botanical gardens in the Netherlands.

Chinese Gardens

Visit Hortus Haren and be transported to China. The best part of the botanical gardens is its Chinese pavilion, inspired by the classical gardens of Suzhou. Complete with a mini waterfall, Chinese teahouse, and beautiful plants. While the whole garden of Hortus is best seen in the spring and summer, the architecture and nature is pretty whenever you visit.

The Botanical Gardens

The Chinese garden might be the most beautiful part of Hortus Haren, but there are plenty of other good sights to see here. You can easily spend 2 hours strolling through the gardens. You’ll discover the Rock garden, Herb garden, English garden, and much more.

There are a few surprises along the way throughout Hortus Haren!

  • Visit and the summer and the bee and butterfly garden is buzzing with activity. You can buy honey made here too.
  • How about some art? Art and nature - it’s a two for one deal. Paintings, sculptures, and photography exhibits are regularly held at Hortus Haren. The garden holds an annual sculpture exhibit from around May to September where the sculptures are placed through the gardens, really making this place unique.
  • Bringing the family? Hortus Haren is kid friendly with free trail maps for scavenger hunts available from the reception.
= The Celtic Garden is an interesting one to visit. Here there’s a group of trees with carvings in their bark. These carvings symbolise birth dates - basically the Celts had their own way of doing astrology. Find your sign on the trees and see what it means.
