On wheels or on foot check out this vintage tunnel that’ll take you under the River Maas in Rotterdam.

  • Rotterdam’s answer to Antwerp’s Sint Annas Tunnel, the 1.3km Maastunnel takes pedestrians, cyclists and cars safely across the Maas River. If you are exploring Rotterdam, there’s a good chance you’ll need to use the tunnel which you’ll find near Het Park and the Euromast.
  • The tunnel’s got a characteristic rectangular shape and tiled walls. Think it has a vintagey feel? You’d be right! The Maastunnel was built in 1937. You’ll really be taken back in time as you descend into the underground tunnel on wooden escalators.
  • Secret Beginnings: Construction on Maastunnel began in 1937 but it didn’t open until 1942. However, it had to be opened in secret so as to not alert the Nazis to the tunnel’s existence.
